About Us
Gallery-backed artwork valuations for everyday owners
We help you understand what your artwork is worth — and connect you with the right path to sell it when you're ready. Free valuations, honest guidance, no pressure.
Who we are
whatsmyartworth.com is an independent artwork valuation service backed by an established gallery and private art dealer. We're based in Minneapolis and serve collectors, inheritors, and everyday art owners worldwide.
When you submit artwork, a real person reviews it — someone with years of gallery experience and genuine knowledge of the current market. We research the artist, assess the piece, and give you the same honest assessment we'd give a client walking into our gallery.
Our goal is simple: help you understand what you have, what it's worth, and what your options are — whether that's selling, keeping, insuring, or donating.
How we help
The process starts with a free valuation. Upload photos of your artwork, and we'll research the artist, assess originality and condition, and provide a realistic market value range. From there, what happens depends on what your piece is worth.
For artwork valued over $1,000
You'll receive a detailed valuation with recommendations tailored to your piece. Depending on the artist, medium, and market demand, we may:
- Make a direct purchase offer through our gallery
- Recommend consignment or listing on our platform
- Connect you with the right buyer through our network of auction houses, dealers, and collectors
You're never obligated to sell. We present options and let you decide.
For artwork valued under $1,000
You'll receive an honest value range and practical guidance on selling independently. We'll explain which platforms make sense for your piece, how to photograph and describe it, and what price to expect.
We don't inflate values to make you feel good — if a piece is worth $200, we'll tell you, and we'll help you understand why.
What happens when you sell through us
If your artwork has significant value and you choose to sell, we can help facilitate the sale through our gallery or dealer network. Here's how that works:
- Direct purchase — For the right pieces, our gallery may make you a cash offer. You receive payment directly; no waiting for auction results or buyer financing.
- Gallery consignment — Your piece is listed for sale through our gallery, either in-person or on our website. We handle photography, listing, and buyer negotiations.
- Network placement — For pieces better suited to auction or a specialized dealer, we connect you with vetted partners who can reach the right buyers. We don't send your artwork to whoever pays us the highest referral fee — we match it to the channel most likely to get you a fair price.
Throughout the process, you stay informed and in control. We don't take possession of your artwork until you've agreed to terms, and we don't pressure you into decisions.
How we make money
Transparency matters, so here's how the business works:
Your valuation is free. We don't charge for research, value estimates, or guidance. Whether your piece is worth $50 or $50,000, you pay nothing to find out.
We earn money when artwork sells. If you choose to sell through our gallery or network, we earn a commission on the sale — paid by the transaction, not by you as a separate fee. This aligns our incentives: we only succeed when you get a fair deal.
We don't sell your contact information. We don't push you toward channels that pay us more. And we don't inflate valuations to get you excited about selling something that isn't worth the effort.
What we don't do
To set clear expectations:
- No formal appraisal documents — We provide market valuations, not certified appraisals for insurance, estate, or IRS purposes. If you need a formal appraisal, we'll tell you when it's warranted and what to expect.
- No authentication certificates — We assess likelihood and flag concerns, but we don't issue official authentication. For significant works, we'll recommend the appropriate expert or foundation.
- No inflated values — We give you realistic, market-driven ranges based on actual sales — not wishful thinking or hype designed to get you to list with us.
- No pressure to sell — Many people just want to know what they have. That's a perfectly valid reason to use the service, and we won't hound you afterward.
